Generic travel risk assessment
In most cases, for low risk activities (such as travelling to conferences, meetings or events) in low threat destinations a generic risk assessment (or other local procedure or code for travel) can be used; providing that there are no special circumstances requiring further consideration, such as health or disability.
The example generic risk assessments provided for low risk travel in the UK and overseas can be adopted locally and signed by all staff who will be undertaking the travel; either at their induction, or prior to travel.
Adapted travel risk assessment
Where circumstances are outside the scope of school or directorate generic risk assessments, or aspects require further consideration, the generic risk assessments for low risk travel in the UK and overseas are provided as word documents, to enable you adapt them by adding in additional hazards or circumstances and control measures. For example this might take into account travelling overnight, in bad weather, to more remote locations, or a specific individual’s needs.
Specific travel risk assessment
A specific (bespoke) risk assessment must be carried out using the University’s risk assessment form in the case of the following scenarios:
If you need any help in preparing your risk assessment, you may seek further advice from your school/local safety advisor.
If you are travelling in a group, such as on fieldwork, you should speak to the group leader about the risk assessment requirements.
