Postgraduate Research (PGR) Students

It is a mandatory requirement of the University that all new PGR students receive health and safety induction information.

The health and safety induction is specific for your Faculty.

This is delivered in two ways:

1. University information

The central University health and safety induction modules for PGR students are delivered online through Blackboard.

Module 1 is a mandatory module for all students and is in three parts:

Part 1 – University expectations: a very short introduction to the University, how we aim to provide a healthy and safe working environment and some basic expectations of students.

Part 2 – Your safety: another short section containing action students can take to keep them and the work environment safe, and

Part 3 – Principles of risk assessment: Ensuring the health and safety of people in the university is based on assessing the risk of harm associated with all the activities undertaken and identifying the appropriate action needed to prevent or reduce that harm occurring. This part of the course guides students through the principles so they can be applied them to their particular research.

Enrolment onto the other modules is dependent on the student’s research project and on standard School pathways. These modules are:

Module 2 Working in labs and workshops.

This module is a general introduction to some of the common hazards found in laboratory and workshop environments (chemical, mechanical and electrical hazards) and some actions to reduce the risk. It also explains the safety signs found in the workplace and an introduction to personal protective equipment (PPE).

Module 3 Chemical risk assessment.

This module is in two parts:

Part 1 - background information on assessing chemicals risks

Part 2 - the essential that need to be considered when identifying hazards, evaluating risk and deciding on appropriate control measures.

Module 4 Biosafety

This module is in four parts:

Part 1 - an introduction to the routes of infection within the laboratory setting, and highlights the consequences to researchers and others of the loss of containment in terms of personal risks and environmental risks. It also explains how following written arrangements (SOPs, local codes) can control these risks.

Part 2 – cabinet safety- different types of microbiological safety cabinets are described.

Part 3 - extra control measures: Good occupational safety and hygiene (GOSH), good microbiological practice (GMP) and the hierarchy of control are explained.

Part 4 – the importance of working safely, regulations and compliance.

Module 5 Off-campus work (including fieldwork)

This module is designed to help in the planning and organisation of off campus activities including fieldwork. It covers the definition of fieldwork, the university guidance, roles and responsibilities. It also provides information on how to manage the risks and some useful resources.

2. School/Research Project-specific information

This School or Course-specific induction information should be provided locally to all PGR students in addition to the University information and can be delivered in any suitable format, eg electronically, face-to-face, written.

In most cases, students will be enrolled onto courses by their School when progression pathways are set up. Students may also enrol individually by applying through the Staff Learning and Development (links below). Supervisors should check enrolment on and completion of these induction modules with their students.

The pass mark for each module is 70% overall. Students can check their marks in the My Grades page within each unit.

Completion of these modules is recorded regularly on the Training Catalogue. This also updates any course milestones on eProg. Schools are expected to promptly achieve a 100% completion rate. Any questions or issues related to these modules should be sent to their correspondent school administrator.
